Where Are Others Going?

  • Bedrock Billards - the place with the lowest ceiling and(previously) smokiest place I had been in DC. It'll be awesome to be able to see past my glass of beer!

  • I'm so looking forward to a smoke-free DC! Can't wait to check out Science Club, Ozios, Saint-Ex, and Aroma. I'm also excited to visit Wonderland. I checked it out in the past after hearing that their upstairs was smoke-free, and while it was a fun spot, it seemed like their smoke-free policy was never enforced. Hoping that will change in Jan.!

  • The Raven - the best little dive bar in DC, and also the smokiest. Can't wait to hang out there more in smoke-free bliss. Also, 18th Amendment on Capitol Hill - great staff, friendly people, and way too much smoke at the moment.

  • Paper Moon, Bambule and other dance places - yey!!! Thank you!
    >> MR
  • Atomic Billiards! I love that place but can only stay for an hour MAX b/c of the smoke. I can't wait for smokefree DC!

  • The bar in Kramer books! I think it is called the Afterwards Cafe. They have wonderful draft beer, but it is horribly smoky in there, so we have avoided it like the plague. We'll also go to Tunnicliffs and Stoneys -- two great bars that are currently filled with too much smoke. Other places to visit are the Saint-Ex bar downstairs and the rooftop bar at Tabaq. Finally, we are looking forward to going to shows at the Black Cat and the 9:30. We tried each place once, but the smoke almost killed us.

  • I used to live in DC and went to Atomic Billards often. Now I live in Virginia and don't make the trip because it's not as convenient and smoky too. Now I plan to visit there more often because not only was it a favorite place of mine, it will be smoke free! I think I'll get a membership too!

  • To the CVS to buy some nicotine patches, I guess. Looks like it's time to kiss the cancer sticks goodbye.

  • I have been avoiding going out in general because of smoke-I can't wait to take my girlfriend to Madam's Organ, Bedrock Billiards, and countless other soon to be smokeless venues!
    >> Can't wait to go out
  • JRs and Remingtons. I quit going to Showtune Mondays at JRs because of the smoke; the same applies to Saturday nights at Remingtons. I'm looking forward to going out again and spending my dollars. I'm sure I'm not alone by any means.

  • I can't wait to visit a smoke-free Pour House on PA Ave. They have my favorite beer on tap (Redhook IPA) and I will go more often now that I won't be poisened by secondhand smoke!
    >> Kim
  • 9:30 Club, the Black Cat, and the Dubliner. My husband and I enjoy live music and pubs, but I can't stand the smell and irritation to my eyes and throat from the smoke. Looking forward to enjoying the DC nightlife as we used to in smokefree NYC.

  • JR's in Dupont. I look forward to being able to have a drink there with friends without having to shower and was all of my clothing immediately afterwards... Also Banana Cafe's piano bar, inside at Dupont Italian Kitchen, and many other places that have been too smoky!

  • LaTasca on 7th St. - altho' we've been going there, we try to sit as far from the bar as possible but in the last 6 months, gave up. We love it and went to go back. I concur w/ Michael T. re Chef Geoff's - went for brunch once w/ friends and won't go back til this law is a done deal.

  • My wife and I are particularly excited about checking out the music venues around town -- from the 9:30 Club and Black Cat to the various small jazz venues on U Street and other parts of town.

  • Logan Tavern -- We went once, when we had tickets at Studio Theatre, and requested the last table in the back, a terrible table by the kitchen, just because it was further from the bar. Then we came to our senses and resolved only to eat at smoke-free restaurants even if it meant a walk of several blocks more. Dakota Cowgirl -- We ate there once when it was Hamburger Mary's. The price was reasonable, the service was good, and what we could taste of the food, delicious. But even in the furthest corner of the nonsmoking section, we breathed pure smoke. My husband had a cold and two days later it turned into pneumonia; I am convinced the smoke was the reason. (I wrote both the local restaurant and chain office without getting a response.) Actually I would want to make sure the smoke is thoroughly aired out before eating there again. Chadwick's on Wisconsin Ave., ditto, though luckily neither of us got sick that time. But the smoke made it too unpleasant to ever go back. 600 Restaurant at the Watergate, where the smoke from the central bar practically knocks you over when you enter. We also have season tickets to Kennedy Center, and have opted for the mediocre food of their cafeteria rather than a more gourmet meal in an atmosphere that endangers our health. There are more, but I have to get back to Xmas shopping. So I'll just add that even when we made the mistake of trying the above, we spent less money than we might have if they were smoke free. Believe me, we did not opt to linger over a second glass of wine, coffee or dessert in any of the above! Rather, we asked for the check and got out as fast as we could.

  • 9:30 Club, Black Cat, DC9, dance clubs such as Five. Local bars for a drink with a friend when I can finally come out not reeking of smoke!
    >> JB
  • Bedrock and Atomic Billiards -- two of my favorite places that I've stopped going because I can't stand the smoke.
    >> DCLou
  • The new Bobby Vans on NY Ave. And just about anywhere in DC.
    >> Dawn
  • JR's, The Childe Harold, Timberlakes, and all the other places I have walked into but then walked out of because of the smoke-filled air.
    >> MGO
  • Bananas Cafe on Barracks Row! They have a wonderful piano bar -- except you can hardly find your way around through the thick smoke that't there now. Also Tratoria Alberto (the last time we were there it just REEKED of smoke!), and Ellington's on Eighth! We can't wait for January 2!
    >> Terry Goodwin
  • 9:30 Club and the Black Cat. I go to these places anyway, but it'll be nice not to have to shower immediately and wash the stinky smoke off my clothes after every show. Also I can bring my friend R, a music lover who unfortunately has asthma -- I can't even count the number of times she's said, "Oh I love that band! Oh damn they're at the 9:30 club." No more second-hand polonium, hooray! http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/01/opinion/01proctor.html
    >> AN in DC
  • I will go to my "gay Cheers" (like) bar, JR's on 17th Street, more often!
    >> CCD
  • Most looking forward to fun spots in Dupont: Brickskeller, Gazuza, 18th Street Lounge, Ozios, Cafe Citron etc. and about a hundred other places throughout DC!
    >> Mep
  • Frankly I have a laundry list of places to go when the ban takes effect. But I do recall being in Lucky Bar once and I could barely stand it. I had to leave after about 15 minutes because I could not take the smoke. I can't wait until the ban is in effect!!
    >> BG
  • Smith & Wollensky's, Arcadiana, Alero, Logan Tavern, The Fireplace, Omega - gosh, too many to list. Going to any of these places now would actually put my life at risk. CDC warns that, "Persons who already have heart disease are at especially high risk of suffering adverse effects from breathing secondhand smoke, and should take special precautions to avoid even brief exposures."

  • The Dubliner. Those Guinness Burgers will taste a lot better when I can actually smell them.
    >> Pau
  • Dupont Italian Kitchen. The last time I went there the smoke from upstairs was so bad that I had a headache for two days.
    >> RJS
  • Although the food at Chef Geoff's downtown is excellent, the smoky air really ruined it. I can't wait to go back without the smoke.
