Ramping up his effort to make American University’s smokefree areas mean something, student Noah Jacobs has been collecting cigarette butts from the ground on campus. They come from the areas that are supposed to be smokefree but aren’t, because students ignore the building setback signs. Jacobs, a graduate film student who has produced a video about [...] Smokefree DC and the Center for Tobacco Regulation at the University of Maryland have sent letter to seven area universities, urging them to follow Towson University’s example and go smokefree. In the letters, Smokefree DC and the Center point out the health harms of secondhand smoke and the many problems associated with merely attempting to limit [...] This is unusual: A cigar-smoker who was taken to court by his neighbors has agreed to pay them $2,000 every time he lights up, the New York Post reports. That should settle a lawsuit filed by a couple who said that their neighbor’s cigar smoke was sickening their children, ages 6 and 3. They were experiencing [...] Today, Smokefree DC sent the following letter to Councilmember David Catania (At Large), chair of the city’s health committee, and ccd the mayor and D.C. Council. Note that the legislation introduced recently by Councilmember Jack Evans (Ward 2) would apply to dozens of hotels, permitting dozens of exemptions to the smokefree workplaces law annually. This is [...] Honduras went smokefree today, and the law is more comprehensive than most laws in U.S. cities and states. Not only does it require all indoor spaces to be smokefree, but it says that people shouldn’t smoke outside if they are within two meters of another person. Councilmember Jack Evans (Ward 2) has introduced a bill to carve out a permanent exemption to the very popular smokefree workplaces law, which made all indoor workplaces smokefree. He was successful in pushing through “emergency” legislation to do a favor his friends in [...] Three cheers to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where a strong smokefree law took effect earlier this month. The law covers not only bars and restaurants but areas within 20 feet of all outdoor public transportation stations and platform shelters. Hear that, Metro? It can be done. The law also covers laundromats, schools, hotels, casinos, shopping centers and [...] Here’s a case that apartment management companies everywhere should pay attention to: A judge in Nassau County, N.Y., ruled that a nonsmoking tenant should be permitted to break her lease and pay reduced rent because her complaints about a smoking neighbor were not addressed. The company had sued the tenant for $12,000 in unpaid rent. Here’s [...] Well this is a boneheaded idea. A lawmaker in Washington state has introduced a bill that would let bar owners violate the smokefree workplaces law — for a price. That’s right. Bill SB708 would allow for “smoking establishment permits” that would allow patrons of bars to light up. Permits would cost between $1,000 and $3,000. The guy who introduced [...] The New York City Council has voted overwhelmingly to make that city’s parks and beaches – including Times Square — smokefree. We’re talking about 14 miles of beaches and 1,700 parks. The vote was 36-12, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg (champion of smokefree workplaces and early pioneer in making big cities smokefree) is expected to sign it [...] |
