Heart attacks dropped after Mass. smokefree law took effect

Fatal heart attacks dropped by 7.4 percent after Massachusetts implemented its smokefree workplace law in 2004, according to a study coming out next month in the American Journal of Public Health. The law prevents 270 deaths from heart attacks annually, the authors conclude.

Some communities in Massachusetts already had smokefree laws before the statewide law passed; in those areas, heart attacks still declined, but less sharply.

The results mirror those of other studies conducted in jurisdictions that have gone smokefree, such as Helena, Montana. The study was reported by FairWarning, a site that writes about safety and health news.
